Hi,

How can I keep the image attachments and custom fields of a post on the translation of a given post?

Here's what I'm trying to do, I have a catalog of products, each one in a post. Each post has custom fields like "price", "reference", etc. and attached product images.

Whenever I create a translation for a post, I have to re-input the custom field values and re-upload the images. In my view this makes no sense, as they are the same for both languages.

So, is there a way to keep the custom fields and galery "untranslated" in some way ?

FYI, I am using the custom fields template plugin.

There is a solution for this. In your theme, you can look up the post in the original language and display the images attached to it.

Have a look here:

1. Use the icl_object_id to get the post in the language in which it has the attached images.
2. Get the images for that post (meta data) and display them.

This is independent of the plugin you use to manage the custom fields.

Thanks a lot, it works like a charm!

I'll post an example here, it might help others.

French is the base language of my site, which is a catalogue of various products. All the products posts have many custom fields attached to them like "price", "reference","city", "zip code", etc.

When I translate the posts in the admin, I don't re-enter all those custom fields informations. Also I do not re-upload the product images in the gallery of the translated post. But whenever I need to show the custom fields or images on the site in the english version, I do like this :

// get the ID of the french version of current post $o_ID = icl_object_id($post->ID, 'post', false, 'fr'); // get the custom fields $ref = get_post_meta($o_ID, 'Référence', true); $price = get_post_meta($o_ID, 'Prix', true); $city = get_post_meta($o_ID, 'Ville', true);

And to show for example the 3 first images of the gallery, I did like this :

$args = array('post_type' => 'attachment','numberposts' => 3,'post_status' => null,'post_parent' => $o_ID); $attachments = get_posts($args); if ($attachments) { foreach ($attachments as $attachment) { echo 'wp_get_attachment_image($attachment->ID); } }

Easy !

This is a very typical thing that many others are struggling with. If you like, you can write a guest post for our blog and I'll publish it under your name (linking to you and everything).

To make this interesting, it would need to include the background story of what you're trying to achieve, the problems of having duplicate images and the step by step solution.
