Hi again. I didn't want to leave the thread hanging.

I deleted everything and got a fresh installation, except this time I used an older easyphp version (3.0). Everything has been going on flawlessly so far.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the issue but this is the only thing I did differently.

In any case I just wanted to leave this for future reference.

And thank you guys for the help!

Japanese characters are not the issue. What probably is the problem is the combination of languages in different domains AND blog not in the root directory. It's not something that we can work on right now.

WPML relies on the URL in order to tell the language. We've tested it with the standard permalink structures, but it's possible that with some settings (like you've done) it will not work.

Sorry about all of this.
I don't know what the issue was, but when I changed a couple of other things it suddenly started working properly.
I still don't know what was happening, so hopefully it will not happen again.
Thanks anyway for the help.

For the record, I have tested the issue of the Japanese characters and that is not the issue.

I'd still really like to find a way to make this work. Is this a situation where a paid support might be able to solve the issue in a creative way? If so, someone please point me in the right direction.

Oooh Yes, sorry! Sometimes i forget in which language I'm talking :) Translation of my previous comment:
-----------------
Hello,
Thanks for this great plugin!
It seems to work perfectly well when I put it in the footer. My translations appear when I click.

But for the sidebar widget, the only thing appearing is the title ("Language") et not the list (english and french). it is inactive even if I click on it. Unusable.

I have 2.9 version, Cutline theme, et my other widgets are:
categories
search this blog
text

It's annoying because (almost) nobody goes down to the footer, the sidebar widget is really mandatory.

Has anybody encountered the same problem, please? Do you have any clue? I'm not very "technique".
Thanks for your help.
Have a great day.

From the WP Codex:

This setting increases PHP Memory only for WordPress, not other applications. By default, WordPress will attempt to increase memory allocated to PHP to 32MB (code is at beginning of wp-settings.php), so the setting in wp-config.php should reflect something higher than 32MB.

Minimum required PHP memory limit for a vanilla WP install appears to be only 32MB, which is what mine was set to before I changed it.

You need to find out what server you are running. Is it Windows or Linux? you might have folder permission issue. Under windows your wp-content folder needs to have permission for network services group and same on Linux that folder's owner needs to be your webserver otherwise you will have problems upgrading and activating plugins.

It won't work if your webserver is IIS. For some reason IIS doesn't do Unicode properly. However in your case your webserver is Apache so maybe you have an older version of Apache. In any case to test it out to make sure it is due to the Japanese characters the best way would be to change your permalink to post IDs instead of name and see if your links will start working or not.

If you want us to build a compatibility package for this purpose you can open a Paid support ticket, add more details and we'll send a quote.

pargudo: if your problem is the 404 and not the category tag thing above here is how I solved it:

open the file in your folder:
wp-content/plugins/sitepress-multilingual-cms
called:
sitepress.class.php

change the lines 404 to 411 that read:
redirect_canonical($requested_url);

                                if(empty($wp_query->posts)){
$wp_query->is_404 = true;
$template = get_404_template();
include($template);
exit;
}

to this:

                                if($wp_query->query_vars['error'] == '404'){
$wp_query->is_404 = true;
$template = get_404_template();
include($template);
exit;
}
redirect_canonical($requested_url);

save the file (make sure if you saved it on your computer that you also upload it to your server). refresh and voila, it should be done.

if you upgrade to a newer version of WPML and they do not incorporate this fix (or fix the problem in some other [possibly/probably better?] way) you will have to redo this. the line numbers might not match up exactl in another version.

good luck,

'this file' refers to the readme.txt file in which those instructions are in. And the folder containing it is sitepress-multilingual-cms that needs to be placed under the plugins folder.

Note that you should put the entire folder under plugins. i.e. have /wp-content/plugins/sitepress-multilingual-cms/...

That did it, thanks a whole bunch!

Might I suggest you make mention of that here? Maybe it's not necessary for everyone, but it could be mentioned as something to try if you have problems.

Thanks again!

The Persian name was changed in the latest update. The name you are using in 1.7.2 may be the name that is being used the most but it is also an incorrect name. The name was being used in the prior version was correct and shouldn't have been changed. Is there anyway that I can change it back to what it was?

Obviously whoever told you guys to change doesn't even know how to call his own language properly.

It's online.
[Removed my link after resolution]

It's running as a cloud site on Rackspace. We have 73 other sites also set up as cloud sites, none of which have any PHP or database related problems.

(If you're on the property search page, the language switcher won't work, because the translation of that page is set to link directly back to the English page, eventually with a message stating that it's currently available only in English.)

Right now it's showing a white-page on the Spanish end, because I'm trying to get a custom field search set up for the properties, and that's one of the plugins that my install of WPML doesn't seem to like.

Is it running on your local server or an online one?

Maybe you're running out of PHP memory, or just very slow DB access?

Hello,
I'm trying to implemet several languages to my site: http://www.espadamedia.ro
The Hungarian language - native name (Magyar) - appears uncapitalized: "magyar". The other two language names appear OK.
Could you please tell me what to edit in order to capitalize the first letter of the language name?

WordPress 2.9.2, WPML 1.7.1

Thank you.
